Our Vision & Values

About Wadhwani AI

Wadhwani Institute for Artificial Intelligence is a nonprofit applied AI institute developing AI solutions for social good. Working in close partnership with government, academia, and civil society, we design and deploy technology that addresses critical challenges in health, agriculture, education, and climate resilience. Our mission is to build inclusive, context-aware AI tools that improve lives at scale, empowering frontline workers, strengthening public systems, and advancing equitable development across underserved communities.

About Wadhwani AI KIRAN

Today's AI discourse requires broader accessibility, democratized learning, and innovation that transcends business constraints to create solutions that are sustainable, scalable, and responsive.  This calls for a Digital Third Space where diverse voices can participate regardless of language or background.

Wadhwani AI KIRAN (Knowledge Initiative for Responsible AI Networks) is India’s shared space for people exploring AI and social impact.  We bring together everyday citizens, grassroots organizations, policymakers, researchers, and technologists to collaborate, innovate, and share knowledge. We believe AI becomes a force for good  only when grounded in context, equity, and collective imagination. Here, you'll find:

A growing community shaping the future of AI in India

  • Engineering collaborations  to build Open Source, deployable solutions

  • Inner-source tools, models, and frameworks  for sector-wide development

  • A comprehensive resource library spanning human-centered design , engineering and capacity building

  • Real-world use cases and stories of how AI is being applied for public good

This is not just a website β€” it’s a collaborative third space building ethical, inclusive, and human-centered AI from the ground up.

Theory of Change

What is Inner Source

Traditionally, inner sourcing is when an organization uses open-source practices (like code reviews, documentation, shared repositories) within the organization to encourage internal reuse and collaboration across teams. However, as an organisation our work is constantly evolving and we are consciously working towards becoming an open-source first organisation. As we transition, we have chosen to work in a phased manner. By this we mean:

1. Opening up collaboration across multiple internal or partner organizations,

  1. Without immediately releasing the work publicly (i.e. not fully open source yet),

  2. While using open-source-like workflows (PRs, documentation, issue tracking, etc.)

We hope this will push for shared innovation within the ecosystem, encourage co-development, and cultivate open-source readiness with partners. Our documentation has common contribution guidelines and a forking request form. Reach out to us at community.kiran@wadhwaniai.org for any other questions.
